I think more people being able to create software to solve their needs is good. You're describing egoism, that you aren't special anymore because your identity is based on external validation, that this "hard" thing you do is accessible to anyone now. I don't think that's a good impulse.

One of the first interesting programs I made was LOGO in flash (actionscript) :D It's a great tool for learning basic programming since it's interactive, graphical, and simple.

jesus christ i don’t get this attitude at all. you do realize that software is like 100x easier to make than it used to be right? the world is severely idea-constrained in a way that it hasn’t been since, what, 1992 with the web? i love robust, “hard problem” engineering more than your average bear, but we are so much further down the alan kay “the right pov is worth 60iq points” road than we have ever been in my lifetime, and this is a very non-obvious, creative mashup of things that i directly found inspiring. not because i think the project is perfect or genius or extremely well-executed or anything like that— because it is a creative mix of things, and we live in an age where we can be exponentially more creative with what kinds of atoms we can smash together than ever before.

A huge percentage of the cars I see on the highway are tailgating. People are awful drivers.

The CDL comparison seems misleading. Those are very large and safe vehicles that are mostly on the highway. Being close to that number is impressive to me.

Apple design is the polar opposite of the MX-5. The MX-5 is a masterpiece of mechanical design and function. Apple makes minimalist purely electronic fashion gadgets that are highly form over function and remove user agency.

The Miata is good at one thing which is being fun. It’s not good at being a car. Apple’s devices meet most people’s functional needs very well.

What does it mean to not be good at being a car?

It’s a terrific car if you want a great handling convertible at a low price point. As you said, it’s fun.

It’s not good at moving a lot of people or things, or going really fast, or lasting for 500k miles, or being as cheap as possible. Other cars are good at some of those things, but what is the Miata missing that is otherwise required to be a ‘good’ car?

The pixel bootloader can be unlocked, also Android is significantly more of an open platform than iOS. I mean, stuff like Morphe exists on Android.
