My step 1 to understanding a new language has always been to build a simple, file-serving HTTP server without using any HTTP-specific libraries.

I really like this suggestion. I'm in the process of learning Haskell now, and plan on using this as a practical learning exercise.

Out of curiosity, how difficult did you find this to complete?
